About Us

Carbonberry was launched on Earth Day 2008. Our mission is pretty simple: to help people and organizations reduce their eco-footprint by 10%-50% by the year 2012. We offer conservation coaching services to help customers calculate their footprint and then work with them to create a  practical and realistic action plan.  Think of it as a "Kyoto for the rest of us."

For those who are well on their way down the conservation trail, we offer a wide variety of  quality conservation products not found in most retail stores.  We focus on products that have a reasonable payback and excellent emission or water reduction potential.  We test everything we sell and have an excellent 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

As you'll find out, we love numbers.  Every product description usually has a "By the Numbers" section, where we describe (Sometimes in boring detail ...Did we mention we love numbers?) the environmental benefits of using the product.  In the "Harvesting Hazards" section, we talk about situations where the product should not be used, or perhaps has some end-of-life disposal issues. Heck, we'll even suggest why you shouldn't purchase one of our products. We call this our "Open Kimono" approach and it's one of our core values.

History

Founded by Steve May. Launched Earth Day, 2008.

After many years of being an environmentalist in his own home and community, and a voracious reader of all things "climate change", it became obvious to Steve May that if we North Americans are to meet our obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make the world a better place for future generations, we need to transform ourselves into a conserver society. So he quit his high-paying technology job (No, he’s not independently wealthy and doing this as a hobby!) to start a business aimed at those who would like to start down the conservation path, or those who, like him, are constantly looking for new ways to reduce their water, electricity, natural gas or transportation bills. It’s a win-win idea: you save money and Mama Earth gives you a big smile. Carbonberry was born!

Walk the Talk

  • We donate 1% of our revenue to environmental non-profit groups through the One Percent For the Planet Group.
  • We work with non-profits, such as the Riversides rain barrel.
  • We try to keep the lowest footprint possible to deliver our products to our customers. For instance, if you live close to a Toronto Transit bus, subway or streetcar line, Carbonberry uses Away Courier. They’re a non-profit that provides disadvantaged folks with an opportunity to earn a decent living, and they use public transit to deliver the goods.
  • We make every effort to have green operations. For instance, Carbonberry ships most of its products in re-used cardboard boxes. It takes more time (to remove stickers, etc.) and some people may find it "unprofessional", but heck, Mama Earth likes it, so that’s what we do!
  • We will publish a yearly report on our own eco-footprint from our operations.
  • We test the products we sell, and quantify the eco-benefits, while also taking into consideration the embodied energy required to manufacture the product.
  • We attend eco-conferences and other technical conferences (e.g. Wind, Renewable Energy, Lighting, Water Conservation) to keep current with the latest conservation developments, and provide practical and sound advice to Carbonberry customers.
